A Few Resources
Looking to further your knowledge on nutrition but don’t know where to start? I understand. The internet is full of resources—many of which are contradictory or unreliable. Over the past few years, I’ve read a fair number of books and nutrition studies, but there are a few that I find myself referring to again and again, so I thought I’d share! While this is a good starting point, I encourage you to do your own research and come up with your own list of trusted resources. For now, here is a jump-start.
How Not to Die by Michael Greger, M.D., FACLM
I tell everyone about this book, though the name makes it a tough sell! How Not to Die is truly a treasure trove of information for those interested in nutrition and living a healthier lifestyle. This book cites thousands of studies and is full of interesting facts. It is broken into two parts. The first part walks through the top causes of death, their causes, and the ways they can be prevented through proper nutrition. Part two walks through each (whole foods plant based) food group and how to incorporate these foods into your diet. This book is a rewarding read that will leave you in awe of the power of nutrition.
This website is a nonprofit, science-based public service that provides thousands of articles and videos on the latest research in nutrition. It addresses both fundamentals and controversial topics by providing an analysis on available research. The site is also transparent when research is weak or there simply isn’t enough information. I really appreciate this site’s transparency and how convenient they make it to understand the findings from thousands of studies.
Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition by T. Colin Campbell
I must warn you, this book is no beach read. Many consider Dr. Campbell a controversial figure due to his famous China Study; however, once you get through the section of this book that focuses on Dr. Campbell’s research, the rest of the book is great. It paints a thorough picture of the nutrition paradigm we live in, how profit influences everything from patient advocacy groups to the pharmaceutical industry, and why nutrition must be approached holistically. Though a tough to read at points, this book was really an eye-opener for me.
Here are a few other notable resources I’ve also enjoyed.
- The Whole Foods Diet by Alona Pulde, M.D., Matthew Lederman, M.D., and John Mackey
- Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman, M.D.
